>> storms from el nino are on the way. we'll tell you how to get prepared this storm system but first the weather. >> the biggest concern still a couple of hours away. we will see the strongest storms late morning through early afternoon. once we get to about 3:00, 4:00 today the storms will be off the east coast. they are moving very quickly closer to us. they will slide quickly through the area. by the time we get to friday night we'll be drying things out. temperatures will be mild and we have a really nice and dry saturday in store. right now temperatures a whole lot warmer than the last several mornings. you won't need a jacket for the cold today. we're in the 60's. but you may want a jacket for the rain and an umbrella as well. we've got light showers at this point but this is what we are waiting for. see that red color there? that's the line of storms that's still about three and a half, four hours away from central florida. but it is moving very quickly thanks to a cold front sliding in here. an area of low pressure

drag storms closer to central florida. we'll be getting stronger wind gusts here about 8:00, 9:00 in our western areas first. right now it is just light rain we are dealing with. we've had a couple showers showing up in marion county through flagler and volusia. showers in northern brevard, southern brevard, osceola county. where you see the yellow color, that is rain coming down a little bit harder, more of a moderate shower. temperatures today will be in the middle 70's. 76 in orlando. 76 is where we're headed in melbourne. let's get a traffic update. it is 6:02. >> a bad crash in seminole county involving a motorcycle and vehicle. south of state 46 on weathers field avenue. you're going to have to follow detours to get around it. we have another crash on

there is a portion of pine hills blocked off while they investigate that. hastings street is your plan to get around it. on the left side of the screen, the road is wet but we are seeing things looking nice out for the most part. traffic is flowing. let's take our time as we head out on the roads. westbound on the right side of your screen, not so bad. we're going to the breaking news center. >> we're following breaking news of a fatal hit-and-run in new smyrna beach. police say a bicyclist was riding on state road 44 about a mile east of 495 when he was hit by a dark colored chevy truck. the driver left the scene but was found six miles away on airport road. the pickup had damage consistent with the fatal crash. for now the driver has been charged with dui but additional charges could be added. more details are expected to be released later this

of the victim and the driver. jason: more breaking news to tell you about this morning. a missing 11-year-old in seminole county is triggering a statewide missing child alert. >> he hasn't been seen since wednesday. he was last seen at the colonial granite town park apartments in sanford off international parkway near h.e. thomas jr. parkway. he was wearing a long-sleeved gray and black shirt, green sweat pants and black shoes. he's four feet tall. if you see him call 911. >> this morning in commitment 2016 the candidates are back on the trail after meeting last night in a debate on the fox business network. >> the seven candidates left on the main stage tried to focus on president obama. >> this guy is a petulant child. >> and hillary clinton. >> hillary clinton would be a national security disaster. >> but at times they turned on each other.

carolina. >> the "today" show will have continuing coverage of the republican debate including a one on one interview with marco rubio. catch it on wesh 2 at 7:00. >> a man caught in a section trafficking bust last year will learn his fate. jose alvarez entered a guilty plea in october. investigators say he and two other people were holding a woman captive inside her home. they say they took advantage of her cocaine addiction and forced her to sell her body for section. >> three people are under arrest in connection with the deadly attack in indonesia. seven people were killed including several of the attackers. isis has already claimed responsibility and this morning police say they have retrieved an isis flag from the home of one of the attackers. officials say a police station in a busy mall were targeted. the u.s. embassy is warning americans that more incidents like this are possible.

>> this morning we're waiting to find out when two suspected murderers will be heading back to central florida. they were both caught in miami. deputies say the suspects killed three people last week inside a lake land home. they then shot another person in the face. >> we don't care whether you're a drug dealer or not. we're not going to stand for anybody murdering you. >> we want those people in jail. >> deputies say they're looking for at least two other suspects. >> in orange county, you may soon be asked to weigh in on what time school should start for your teenager. last night during a meeting district leaders suggested conducting surveys. right now high schools in the district ring the bell before 7:30 in the morning. they're trying to figure out if there's enough support and enough money to change that. >> it is a national conversation. many school districts across the country are and

have been grappling with a similar discussion. >> a new start time could end up costing the district. one plan requires about $48 million to pull it off. >> turning back to our first alert weather today. we could get the first taste of this year's powerful el nino. >> storms with potentially dangerous conditions are headed our way. it was back in 2007 a similar el nino pattern brought on deadly tornadoes. >> alex, what are emergency officials say to everyone to get prepared today? >> they are saying that there are a number of steps that you need to be taking. step one is make sure that you have a way to stay in touch. make sure that you're able to track everything that's going on. all of the latest updates, you can do that by looking at social media or look at our wesh 2 weather app as well. that's going to be a tool you can use. we'll help you know everything that emergency

to stay on top of warnings there might be. we don't expect there to be any, really a big outbreak of tornadoes today, if any. we know there is that slight chance amy has been telling you. but you want to stay prepared. this is a preview of el nino storm systems to come. this year's el nino is predicted to be nearly as strong, if not stronger, than the one in 1998 which was the largest in recorded history. that is when we saw florida's worst tornado outbreak. so we will be seeing more of these over the next few months. they're going to follow a similar pattern of coming through in the early morning while it's still dark. officials say you need to be ready to move to a safe place quickly. that is step two. because of the threat of tornadoes which are different from hurricanes in that they don't give you a lot of time to prepare. >> right now we're in a mode where we're receiving information from the national weather service. we're maintaining lines of communication with the national weather service

office, with the county, with the state. be prepared. >> today officials are asking you to bring in anything from outside that isn't secured like your lawn chairs or your plants. again, keep a close eye on social media and our wesh 2 weather app. for more updates on our forecast we turn it over to amy. >> we are talking about the possibility of storms today. if not this morning, right now mainly light rain we're dealing with. the strong storms are a couple of hours away from us. but we are watching that line take shape. it is moving closer to the peninsula. the west coast of central florida. and we are going to be getting that here by late morning. our temperatures today will be much warmer than the last few days. we've got a lot of clouds with those storms and then once the storms head off the east coast in the early afternoon we'll end up pretty quiet for the rest of the evening commute. we are in the 60's right now. it is a far cry from the last several mornings. you don't need a jacket for the temperatures. you might want a jacket for the rain.

light rain falling now and then there's the line of storms. see that red color there, that's out ahead of the cold front. that's what's a couple of hours away from us and we'll be approaching by 8:00, 9:00 to the west side of the state. moving very quickly. right now it is just rain that we have but be prepared for the possibility of stronger storms late morning. here's future cast. in fact showing storms. they will have strong winds in them, 50, 60 miles per hour not out of the question and even an isolated tornado as you get twisting with the wind as you go higher in the atmosphere. through noon today the storms will push off the east coast. by early afternoon most of the storms are gone at that point. so it's during the day kind of time frame. once we get into friday night if you've got dinner plans you should be good. the rain will be done by then. temperatures will be much warmer than every other day this week. we'll talk about your weekend forecast in a few minutes. right now it is 6:11.

>> a few crashes out there already blocking. seminole county a crash on weathers field avenue south of state road 36 where we have a deadly motorcycle crash under investigation. there is a detour set up when you get to that scene. follow that. pine hills road vehicle versus pedestrian crash. they are investigating one at indian atlantic. there is one cropped up. old tampa highway at vintage street. 436 getting busy at a a at -- at altamonte. >> why pregnant women are being told not to visit certain countries now. >> adding to the pride.

the next could bring severe weather our way. amy breaks down the timing in a few minutes. >> take a look at your screen. a statewide alert was issued for 11-year-old dejahn bundick last seen wednesday. if you see him, call police. >> still no word from the person who holds that powerball jackpot winning ticket purchased in melbourne beach. the ticket is worth more than $500 million. some people around town think they know who won but that person says it's not her. >> 6:16. a health alert for you this morning. this is for pregnant women. a location they shouldn't travel to right now. >> the c.d.c. is sending out a warning about a mosquito borne disease called the zika virus. they urged not to travel to brazil where it is spreading. officials say they have had more than 3,000 cases of babies born in brazil with

abnormally small heads and brains. >> often leading to death on the part of the baby soon after birth or a serious difficulties of brain function and cognitive function. >> medical experts are working on creating a vaccine for the virus. the "today" show will have a full report coming up at 7:00. >> planned parenthood is suing antiabortion activists. this lawsuit is aimed at the center called center for medical progress. planned parenthood is accusing the group of fraud and illegal conspiracy to block abortion rights. >> the law that technically makes it illegal to marry them in florida could be going away. legislators tried to lift the ban on cohabitation for years but haven't been able to do it. that means an unmarried man and woman living together could face a $500 fine and six months behind bars. the law was put into place in 1868. florida is one of only

have a law on the books. >> the orlando pride will grow a little bigger. >> the new prowomen's soccer team. they will take part in the college draft. >> the pride already has the face of the franchise right here. alex morgan won gold in london in 2012. last year she add world cup champion to her resume. today the pride will look to fill roster spots around her. the national women's soccer league draft starting at 10 morning in baltimore. the pride did have the number one overall pick in the portland. their first pick will be tenth overall. total in the draft. the women's team plays at the citrus bowl. next year they will play in the new stadium being built downtown orlando which the lions. if you don't hear your name draft today,

still a chance to earn a roster spot. the club will have an open tryout on sunday. jason: the orlando magic's first trip to the u.k. in more than two decades. they will be facing off against the toronto raptors. magic lost 106-103. they're on their way back home. they head to atlanta mont. >> 6:19. rain the big story. >> there is a big line taking shape in the gulf of mexico. still a couple of hours away from us but it's headed this way. going to have strong winds. getting the kids to disool this morning, there is a little light rain. it's a whole lot warmer. some kids are sleeping in today, don't have school. if you are getting the kids to the bus stop, plan on a little rain. temperatures are in the 60's for most of us so it's a whole lot warmer than every other day this week. they might just want jackets for the rain as

we've got rain in a lot of the area. 75 the turnpike, up and down 95 especially in brevard county, a few showers. lots of clouds as well and breezy winds too. there is the rain there in sumter county and lake. showers in osceola over into brevard. kind of widely scattered and fairly light at this point. however, there is a whole big storm system that is back to the north and west. there is an area of low pressure that is going to head off to the northeast. as it does, this line here, this front that's ahead of it, that's going to get pulled through central florida. as you get winds ahead of this, it's going to get blustery here in the next few hours and then we could have some of those stronger wind gusts inside that line. the timing of this looks to be that line approaching our western areas, marion county, sumter county about 9:00 this morning and then continuing to roll through from west to east through

the biggest threat will be the strong wind gusts inside these storms pushing forward. 58, 60 miles per hour. if we get to 58 miles per hour that is the criteria for a severe thunderstorm warning being issued. if we get twisting in the winds we would have tornado warnings issued. if any warnings are issued we can alert you to that to your smart phone if you're out and about today. make sure you go to wesh.com, sign up for those alerts and download our weather app as well. here's future cast showing mainly rain here this morning. there's 9:00. we start to see that line approaching from the west. we'll have it move very quickly through the area. by noon a lot of storms will be east of orlando. early afternoon the storms will exit brevard county and then once we get into the late afternoon and evening it's going to be a little bit of rain, a couple of clouds, but we'll dry things out for the rest of friday night and stay dry and quiet on saturday. my biggest concerns will be the strong wind gusts and

the downpours inside some of those stronger storms. very low threat for tornadoes but it is a possibility. temperatures will be warm, we'll be in the 70's today. 70's again tomorrow and dry for saturday. on sunday yet another storm system will approach. we'll be monitoring the possibility for storms early on sunday, followed by cooler, dryer air late in the day sunday and into next week. >> a couple of crashes out there. in seminole county looking at one, state road 436 on weathers field avenue. a deadly crash involving a motorcycle and another vehicle. pine hills road, a crash involving a carver u.s.s. pedestrian -- car versus pedestrian. another one in osceola highway, old tampa highway. we're looking outside at i-4, westbound on the right side of the screen, getting

>> powerball fever is fading but the winners are still a mystery this morning. >> we did find out about one woman who thought she hit the jackpot. >> that stories kills me. jason: i'm jason guy. amy, jazmin has been talking about running wipers this morning. amy: a little bit of light rain. we have strong storms we're monitoring for a couple of hours from now. you're okay to get to work. you may need your wipers and raincoat. the rain at this point is fairly light. we get to 8:00, 9:00 and we have stronger storms with big wind gusts that are taking shape back to our west. they will roll into central florida about 9:00, continue to push quickly through the area through noon into the early afternoon. once we get to 3:00, 4:00 we're done with it. storms off the east coast. we will end up with a very quiet evening commute and

stay dry as we head into saturday. it's really just the next ten hours, maybe eight hours that we're going to have to watch the radar very closely. lower 60's is where we are when you head out the door. it is a much warmer story today compared to the last several mornings this week. there's the first batch of rain. this is showers rolling through. it's annoying, makes the pavement a little bit damp. this is what i'm most concerned about, see that red? there is an organized line of showers and storms taking shape and pushing very quickly, about 40, 45 miles per hour towards central florida. as it approaches here about 9:00, marion and sumter you'll be dealing with the storms first. right now marion, sumter, flag ler, volusia, a little bit of light rain. southern brevard, osceola, pockets of rain along the turnpike. western areas get the storms first. the line of storms rolls

across the metro area between 10 and noon and pushes off the coast to brevard county early afternoon today. we will talk more about the timing. i'll show you future cast and we'll talk about the weekend forecast in a few minutes. right now let's head to alex villareal who is talking about how folks in central florida are preparing for today's storm. alex: i'm in front of the compound of the emergency operation center. it is the orlando emergency operation center. you can see the sign behind me that says e.o.c. this center is preparing for the potential for severe weather today. they do have staff on call in case the weather gets bad. officials are calling on you to get yourself and your family ready as well. they say that you should bring in anything from outside that you don't have secured, things like lawn chairs or plants. also watch social media for updates.

you can also use our wesh 2 weather app for that or a weather radio if you have one. and look around now to see where you're going to take cover in case of a warning. when it comes to tornado safety, of course you want to pick the lowest level you can find as close to the center of your home or office as possible. no windows and as many walls as possible between you and the wind. and you also might want to have some supplies like a first aid kit in your safe place. >> we know from the national weather service that we can expect severe storms moving through the area. we don't know what specific area, but within the central florida region and based on the weather information that we're getting, we know that it may come through central florida and have an impact on us. >> it's not just today that be paying attention. we are expecting to see more of these types of and risk of tornadoes over the next few months.

that's because of el nino. they do have the potential to come through overnight and in the early morning hours while people are sleeping. so that is another reason you want to make sure that you are prepared in advance. we will continue to track this for you. we'll have all of your latest forecasts, updates and we're going to continue to tell you how you can make sure that you and your family stay safe in the event things take a turn for the worse. >> any time we see rain sometimes there is trouble on the roads. ted: this is one of those days we are wanting you to take caution. a few of accidents are popping up. in fact there is an investigation happening on weathers field avenue just south of state road 436. this has been here for awhile. florida highway patrol was reporting this as a deadly motorcycle crash. you'll have to follow that detour if you have to follow on weathers field avenue south of 436.

old tampa highway near vintage street crash blocking osceola. use o.b.t. westbound on the west side of your screen getting into downtown orlando not so bad yet. past the conway toll plaza, westbound flow looking good. things start to get busy later on. right now we're going to the breaking news center. >> following breaking news out of sanford this morning of this missing child. there is a statewide missing child alert in 11-year-old dejahn bundick from sanford. first we'll show you the location where he was last seen. he was last seen wednesday on oak springs place in the colonial grand town park apartments off of international parkway near h.e. thomas jr. parkway. here's a look at the boy. he was wearing a long-sleeved gray and black shirt, green sweat pants and black shoes. he is four feet tall.

to call 911. jazmin: following breaking news. we're waiting to learn the name of the driver suspected in a deadly hit-and-run in new smyrna beach. jason: officers say the driver was in a truck. the driver was arrested and dui. released. disoip in orange county three people were injured in a crash that involved a sherrifs deputy. it happened on americana boulevard around 7:00 last night. the deputy was responding to a burglary call at the time. the cruiser ran into one car. the deputy was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the cause of the crash under investigation. jason: today we can find out if a high profile murder trial will be delayed. attorneys were in court trying to get a judge to put off the trial.

killing his wife and two children back in 2013 in volusia count. prosecutors want the death penalty. the defense wants the judge to take the death penalty off the table and move forward with this trial. >> in the day ahead attorneys for convicted killer david damus are asking for a new trial. they say one of the jurors in a previous trial did not disclose her daughter was dating damus's cousin. he was convicted for murder in june. his accomplice in the case confessed to the crime. >> new video of a chicago shooting police officers fought for years trying to keep it from being released. the video shows 17-year-old cedric chatman being shot and killed as he ran from an officer in 2013. you don't see the actual moment he was shot. police say the teen did not have any weapons but they say he was suspected in a carjacking. a federal judge ordered the

charged. >> new details on what led to the capture of ten american sailors in iran. u.s. officials now say a navigation error, not a mechanical problem, caused them to accidentally sail into iranian waters tuesday. defense secretary ash it's unclear if the crew made the mistake or if and a navigational equipment is to blame. overnight, more than a dozen people are dead after a tour bus overturned on a mountain in japan. officials say the bus was on its way to a ski resort this morning when it plowed through a guardrail and into a tree. at least 14 people were killed and the other 27 on board were hurt. the government is promising a full investigation into the crash. jason: in hours two nasa astronauts will venture outside the international space station. the two perform a spacewalk to fix a

to come forward. >> good morning. it is 6:43. we have rain we're dealing with for the morning commute. it's a whole lot warmer this morning compared to the last several days. most of us are in the 60's. our big story today is we've got strong thunderstorms headed our way. they'll be rolling through

early afternoon. once we get into the evening commute the rain will be gone and it will have pushed off the east coast. right now we're in the lower 60's in most of the area. it's a whole lot warmer than 30's and 40's we had every other day this week. the initial rain we have now is fairly light that's rolling through. but this is the line. see that red line there? that's ahead of a cold front headed our way very quickly. it's about three and a half hours away from marion and sumter counties. we'll get strong wind gusts rolling through here about 9:00 or so, continuing to push from west to east. at this point the radar is showing lighter rain where you see the yellow it's more moderate showers. it's basically scattered from now to about 9:00. once we get to 9:00, 10:00, stronger storms will push toward the east coast through noon. east of orlando by lunch time. the coast in brevard county and continuing to clear out as we head into friday night.

are a winner or are they just staying private? in addition to melbourne beach, we have two other big winners, one near los angeles and another near memphis. in melbourne beach the ticket was purchased at publix at driftwood plaza. the store is now in the national spotlight and we're hearing from publix representative. >> we have a lot of loyal customers that shop with us on a weekly basis and daily basis. the odds creates a great opportunity for those who play the lottery. >> we had a false alarm yesterday after speculation quickly spread that the winner lives in a particular subdivision. police showed up saying the homeowner wanted privacy. that homeowner sent out a statement saying i'm not the powerball winner and my family and i would appreciate privacy at this time. the first winners have come forward, a couple in tennessee.

the "today" show. a nurse in california thought she hit it big. turns out it was a prank by her son. her son is about to learn revenge is a meal best served cold. >> you don't do that to mom. jazmin: a man caught on camera stealing thousands of dollars of liquor from a club. police say george goines is seen on surveillance video loading $30,000 worth of liquor and beer into a trash can. he was arrested yesterday. the club's general manager said he hired go ines to help him get off the street. >> kind of a big hit for us as a venue. >> he was selling the bottles for ten dollars a piece on the street.

>> a train that left from sanford was involved in a deadly crash in jacksonville. he hit a car on the tracks yesterday. the driver of the car died at the hospital. none of the passengers on the train were hurt. this amtrak train was heading for northern virginia.

. >> welcome back. it is ten minutes before seven. mostly cloudy and light rain for your morning commute but we've got strong possibly severe thunderstorms on the way in the next couple of hours. 64 in orlando. the winds are coming out of the south so it's a whole lot warmer. we have all the cloud cover keeping us warmer. no 30's and 40's like we have had every other day this week. most of us are mild. just because you don't want a jacket for the cold, you may still want a jacket for the rain. at this point fairly light and scattered but marion county over to volusia and flagler we're seeing light showers rolling in. this is a precursor of what's on the way. this is what we'll deal with during the morning commute until 8:00 or so

along with a lot of cloud cover. all this moisture coming in. but it's this line to the west that we are monitoring, and this is the one that is still about three hours or so away from marion county. that leading edge with this cold front here will push in in the next several hours and between say 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. this line will push right through central florida very quickly and head off the coast. an area of low pressure to the north. we'll head to the north and east and drag this cold front and that line of storms ahead of it. we've got the winds at the surface coming in out of the south and southwest, ahead of this front. higher in the atmosphere we've got this wind that was going this way out of the west. when you go up in the atmosphere and the wind shifts direction a little bit, you can get the twisting of the winds. therefore, we have that low threat of seeing some brief tornadoes develop as this line comes through too. this is why we're monitoring it so closely. the wind gusts inside the

for tornadoes between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. the leading edge rolling into marion county at 9:00. notice how storms continue to push to the east through noon. once we get to noon most of the storms are already east of orlando and continue to push over into brevard county in the early afternoon. once we get to tonight if you have friday night plans through the evening hours, we're quiet, dry. the rain is gone and then we'll stay dry again on saturday. it will be breezy even outside of the storms with gusty winds. temperatures much warmer today despite the clouds, rain and storms, we'll be in the middle 70's. tomorrow quiet and dry means a great saturday in store. kid a palooza going on. i'll be there. stop by and say hi. sunday we have another front. tomorrow we're dry and warm but on sunday we'll see and storms once again. sunday's storms will bring cooler air.

that means highs in the 60's once we get into next week. time for traffic now. >> a crash in seminole county still under investigation. it's on weathers field avenue south of 436, where a deadly motorcycle crash happened a little bit earlier on in the show. while they're investigate that, a portion of the weathers field avenue is blocked off. in seminole county on i-4 not that bad. westbound from altamonte springs from 434 to lee road six minutes. here's a live picture of i-4 in altamonte things looking quiet. a crash near vintage street blocking the lane. you can use o.b.t. to get around that. >> the stories we're working on. >> a driver has been arrested for add deadly hit-and-run in new smyrna beach. police say a bicyclist was hit by a truck while riding on westbound state road 44 last night. officers say the truck was found a short time later. the driver is charged with dui.

jason: a missing child alert has been issued for this 11-year-old seminole county boy. officials say dejahn bundick was last seen on wednesday. if you see him call 911. >> today we could find out if a high profile murder trial will be delayed. attorneys for louise toledo tried to get the trial put off. he is accused of killing his wife and two children. jason: three people are recovering following a wreck that involved a sherrifs deputy. it happened around 7:00 last night. the cruiser rear ended one car pushing it into another. the deputy and two other people suffered minor injuries. jazmin: you may soon be asked to weigh in on what time school should start for your teenager. last night district leaders suggested conducting surveys. right now all high schools in the district ring the bell before 7:30 a.m. jason: the orlando pride
